Select multiple vertices and work with them: moving, deleting

Description

Requested by Joe Rose:

I need to alter large shapes (polyline and polygon) with huge number of vertices.
It would be very nice if I could select a group of vertices using SHIFT: select 1 vertex, hold SHIFT and select another vertex, all vertices in between should be selected.
Using CTRL to (de)select specific vertices would als be very nice.
Using the mouse and drag (+ALT key?) a rectangle over a group of vertices to select them would be handy as well.

Of course the DEL key should delete the selected vertices. ESC should deselect and CTRL-Z should undo.
Moving the group should also be possible.

Do you think this is possible?
It would improve the SF Editor tremendously.

Also look at MWGIS-153, because it will use SHIFT+mousemove to move a shape. So this combination cannot be used to move a group of vertices. ALT+mousemove would be a good alternative.
