For SQL Server and SpatiaLite, you can only add a specific table once as a layer on the map. If you try to by-pass it in code, it simply links to the existing reference (thus I can’t symbolize against different columns from the same spatial table, since any change to the first instance affects the other layers the same way). With a sql server source , you can add it through the Add Database Layer,though you are still limited to adding the layer once. This does not happen with the shapefile code.
